Rain and thunderstorms have been a big part of the forecast over the last few days and that pattern will continue for much of the week ahead.

There have been some pockets of heavy rain overnight that have led to isolated flash flooding. Charles County, Maryland, and Prince William County, Virginia, are both under a flood warning. If you encounter flooded roads, turn around, don’t drown.

Westland Middle School in Bethesda, Maryland, is closed due to a tree falling on the school building from the strong storms. Check here for all weather alerts.

Thick clouds and scattered showers will hold afternoon highs in the low 70s just like Sunday. Rain chances will remain in the forecast through Thursday. Most of Monday’s rain will come in the first half of the day, though an occasional shower will remain possible into the evening.

Rain chances Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will come mainly in the late afternoon and evening as is more typical in the summer. Our winds will still be mostly out of the east again Tuesday and that will help to keep temperatures a few degrees below average.

Temps to heat back up later this week

Most of the D.C. metro area will get just above 80° on Tuesday. Southwest winds return on Wednesday and a full-on summer pattern will begin. Highs will get back to around 90° Wednesday afternoon but the high humidity will bring the heat index above 95° and lead to late-afternoon storms.

Thursday will be much the same but should be a few degrees warmer. Our first 100° heat index of the summer is possible Thursday afternoon before the storms get going. A “cold” front will come through Thursday evening leading to a slightly cooler, but far less humid stretch for Friday and Saturday.

Highs will stay in the 80s on Friday but will get back around 90° Saturday. There’s increasing confidence that our first heat wave of the summer will begin on Sunday and could last into the middle of next week.

Afternoon highs of 95° or higher (not including the heat index) look likely and, with very little rain, our air quality could turn quite poor once again.
